Who is a Good Candidate for Laser Resurfacing?

You’re a Houston resident who has heard of laser resurfacing before, but is it the right procedure for you? How do you know that laser resurfacing will take care of the skin blemishes that make you feel embarrassed and self-conscious? Continue reading as we discuss what laser resurfacing is, and whether or not you are a good candidate for the procedure at the Houston Ovation Med Spa.

What is Laser Resurfacing?

Laser resurfacing is a cosmetic facial treatment to alleviate a number of skin conditions. With laser resurfacing, your eyes will be shielded, then a handheld device that emits a quick pulse of high-intensity light will be placed over the face, damaging the upper layer of the skin. By “damaging” the skin, the laser is actually breaking up the unwanted skin condition, allowing your true beauty to shine through underneath.

What Makes Me a Good Candidate for Laser Resurfacing?

Generally speaking, Houston residents will be good candidates for laser resurfacing if they are:

  • In good general health;
  • Non-smokers, as smoking can interfere with the laser resurfacing healing process;
  • Desire to have a more youthful appearance, without the intervention of invasive surgery;
  • Are in good psychological health and have realistic expectations for their treatment;
  • Have one of the following skin conditions:

o    Leathery, sun-damaged skin;

o    Several fine lines;

o    Wrinkles;

o    Crow’s feet;

o    Laxity in your lower eyelid area;

o    Blotchy skin;

o    Brown spots;

o    Scars that make the surface of your skin uneven, such as acne scars; and

o    Certain precancerous skin growths (that have been medically determined to be benign).

What is the Recovery Process Like for Laser Resurfacing?

Immediately after laser resurfacing, you will have red skin and feel like you have a mild sunburn. Your face may be itchy and irritable, you may develop blisters, and your skin may ooze. Whatever you do, don’t scratch or rub your skin! It’s not worth the temporary relief, as scratching, rubbing or popping blisters can result in permanent scarring.

You’ll want to follow your skin specialist’s directions exactly, and do things such as:

  • Wash your skin with a saline or diluted vinegar solution 2 to 5 times a day;
  • Apply any protective skin care treatments or moisturizer that your skin specialist recommends; and
  • Use sunscreen every day – no exceptions!

After your laser surfacing treatment, your skin will peel, and your new skin will appear pinkish in color. This will last for a few months, after which time your normal pigmentation will return.
