What Are BOTOX and Dysport?
BOTOX and Dysport are both injectable purified proteins classified as neuromodulators. These products prevent the contraction of tiny facial muscles that are used when we smile, squint, frown, or make any other expression. The lines and wrinkles caused by these contractions gradually fade after BOTOX or Dysport injections, but Ovation Med Spa patients won’t look unnaturally smooth or “frozen.”
What Do Dysport and BOTOX Treat?
Both Dysport and BOTOX are ideal solutions for “dynamic wrinkles” such as:
- Crow’s feet at the corners of the eyes
- Frown lines between the eyes (the “11s”)
- Laugh lines
- Horizontal forehead wrinkles
Can BOTOX Treat Concerns Other Than Dynamic Wrinkles?
Absolutely. BOTOX effectively treats many other cosmetic and medical conditions, including:
- Gummy smiles
- “Orange peel” dimpling on the chin
- Overdeveloped jawlines
- Excessive underarm sweating (hyperhidrosis)
- Migraine headaches
- TMJ (temporomandibular joint) dysfunction
Which Is Better BOTOX or Dysport?
We tend to prefer Dysport at Ovation Med Spa. The results of Dysport injections generally appear sooner than those with BOTOX and the results often last a bit longer.
Your Dysport/BOTOX Treatment
A Dysport treatment is performed with a very small needle for the injections, which our injectors make with extreme precision. The procedure usually takes only about 15 minutes but may last a bit longer in some cases. There’s no downtime associated with the treatment and you can return immediately to work or any other activities you may have planned. Some patients experience some light bruising or slight swelling, but those side effects resolve on their own. Other than bruising or swelling, other side effects are extremely rare, and Dysport has one of the best safety profiles in medicine.
Can I Combine BOTOX & Dysport With Dermal Fillers?
Many patients benefit from combining BOTOX or Dysport and dermal filler injections. Fillers treat static wrinkles, which are caused by sun damage and the natural aging process. Fillers restore lost volume and, when combined with Dysport injections, can create an overall youthful appearance.
What Is the Recovery Like After Dysport/BOTOX Injections?
Dysport/BOTOX injections typically involve little or no downtime, and patients are usually able to immediately resume most daily activities.* For at least the first 4 hours after injections, however, you should not:
- Lie down
- Exercise vigorously
- Bend over
- Rub the injection site
- Wash your face
Wait at least 24 hours after your injection to drink alcohol, take blood thinners or NSAIDs like ibuprofen or aspirin, or expose your skin to sun, heat, or tanning beds.

Who is the best candidate for Dysport/BOTOX?
The best candidate for Dysport/BOTOX is a physically healthy man or woman with realistic expectations interested in temporarily reducing the appearance of facial lines and wrinkles. These injections are particularly beneficial for patients not interested in undergoing surgery.
What age should I consider getting BOTOX or Dysport injections?
There is no established age at which someone should get BOTOX or Dysport injections. Many people schedule their first treatment after noticing early signs of aging, such as crow’s feet or worry lines. An increasing number of patients are getting “preventative” BOTOX or Dysport injections in their 20s. These treatments can help delay the onset of fine lines and wrinkles.
Do wrinkles get worse after BOTOX wears off?
No. Patients who notice wrinkles re-emerging after BOTOX wears off sometimes assume the injections made their wrinkles more noticeable. This isn’t true. Scheduling BOTOX every few months maintains your results, and most patients require fewer units for subsequent treatment sessions.
Is anesthesia used for the Dysport/BOTOX procedure?
Anesthesia is typically not used with Dysport/BOTOX injections.
How long does a Dysport/BOTOX treatment take?
The Dysport procedure can take anywhere from a few minutes to an hour to complete.
Does Dysport hurt?
Though clients may experience a temporary burning sensation, most patients experience minimal discomfort.*
Are there any risks or complications of Dysport/BOTOX?
There are few complications associated with Dysport or BOTOX. A very small percentage of patients may experience no improvement. Certain patients may experience some local numbness or a burning sensation, swelling, or bruising during the injection.*
When will I see my final results?
Even though the initial results of Dysport tend to show up sooner than with BOTOX, both injectables take 10 to 14 days before you’ll notice the final results.
How long do the results of Dysport last?
The results of Dysport are not permanent. For most clients, the results last 3 to 4 months, though some clients may experience results lasting up to 6 months.**
**Individual results and experiences may vary.
