Causes And Treatment Of Melasma

Melasma is a common skin disorder that causes brownish blotches to appear around the nose, cheeks, chin, and other areas of the body routinely exposed to the sun. Like other skin disorders that cause skin discoloration, melasma is very responsive to treatment with broadband light (BBL). This non-invasive therapy targets the areas of the melasma and delivers light energy to create a uniform skin tone.

What Causes Melasma?

Melasma occurs when the melanin-producing cells create uneven pigmentation, causing brownish blotches on the face. Patients in Houston with a higher likelihood of developing this condition include:

  • Premenopausal women
  • Pregnancy
  • People with darker skin colors
  • Populations exposed to sun

Because many of these factors seem to be linked to hormones, women are far more likely to develop the condition than men.

Treatment for Melasma

When melasma appears closer to the skin’s surface, there are a wide variety of effective treatments. Creams, oral medications, and skin resurfacing treatments can be combined to increase effectiveness and help manage the condition.

At Ovation Medical Spa in Houston, we provide patients with BBL Laser treatment as a safe and effective way to diminish the appearance of melasma. BBL Laser treatment works by applying controlled heat and light to areas of skin resulting in:

  • Areas of skin effect by melasma to gently flake away.
  • The growth of healthy new skin cells with an even skin tone.
  • Smoother skin that is free of melasma.

In just a few short sessions, you will see a dramatic reduction in melasma and a healthy and even skin tone. Click here to see before and after photos for patients in Houston who have been treated with the BBL Laser.

What Will Happen During BBL Treatment?

BBL Laser is a handheld device that administers light and heat energy to treat skin conditions and reduce pigmentation. A trained staff member will spend around half an hour performing this non-invasive treatment. During treatment the patient will have:

  • A trained staff member who will adjust the BBL Laser to treat areas of skin affected by melasma.
  • A handheld device passed over the affected skin multiple times.

After the BBL Laser treatment the patient’s skin may stay red for a few hours and the areas of melasma will temporarily darken and flake off within the first few days of treatment. However, there is no downtime, and patients will be able to resume all normal activities after treatment.

Picoway Resolve

Another featured melasma treatment provided at Ovation Med Spa is Picoway Resolve, which breaks up pigment particles without harming healthy skin. The pigment particles are then removed by the body naturally, resulting in an even skin tone. Because treatment is in short bursts (picoseconds) there is little to no discomfort compared to traditional laser treatment.

Maintaining Your Results

After BBL Laser treatments, patients experience an average of one year without melasma. Our friendly staff will provide home care instructions that will help extend results even longer before needing follow-up treatment. These tips include:

  • Always wearing sunscreen and covering exposed skin from the sun by wearing protective clothing or hats.
  • Applying skin care products that complement the BBL Laser treatment.
  • Following the advice of your primary care physician and taking any medication recommended to help manage your condition.
