Microneedling
Trigger Collagen.
Rebuild Skin.

Microneedling — also called collagen induction therapy — is one of the most effective, research-backed methods for stimulating your skin's natural collagen and elastin production. The principle is elegant: thousands of precision-controlled micro-channels trigger the wound-healing cascade, recruiting fibroblasts to produce new collagen, elastin, and glycosaminoglycans. The result is genuine structural improvement — firmer, smoother, more resilient skin built from the inside out. At Ovation, we use the Dr Pen Hydrapen for its precision depth control and consistent micro-channel creation. The device allows calibrated needle depth from 0.25mm to 2.5mm, enabling treatment customization from gentle epidermal stimulation to deeper dermal collagen induction based on the area and concern being addressed. But microneedling's value at Ovation extends beyond standalone collagen induction. The micro-channels it creates serve as direct delivery pathways for serums, growth factors, and exosome preparations — transforming microneedling from a single-mechanism treatment into a versatile platform technology. When paired with exosomes, PDGF, or other regenerative preparations, microneedling becomes the delivery system that makes everything else work better.

Micro-Channels
📌

Microneedling is one of over 17 skin health technologies at Ovation. It's the collagen-induction foundation — effective as a standalone treatment and transformative as a delivery platform for exosomes, PDGF, and growth factor preparations. Patients from the Heights, Tanglewood, and the Energy Corridor drive to our Galleria-area office for microneedling sessions on Woodway Drive.

The Science

How Microneedling Works

Microneedling works through the percutaneous collagen induction (PCI) mechanism — creating controlled micro-injuries that activate the three phases of wound healing: inflammation, proliferation, and remodeling.

Controlled Micro-Injury
Percutaneous Collagen Induction
Fine needles penetrate the epidermis and upper dermis at calibrated depths, creating thousands of micro-channels per square centimeter. Each channel triggers a localized wound-healing response without causing significant surface damage. The density and depth are controlled by the provider to match treatment goals — shallower for product delivery, deeper for collagen induction.
  • Thousands of micro-channels per treatment area
  • Depth calibrated 0.25-2.5mm based on treatment zone
  • Triggers localized inflammatory cascade at each micro-injury
  • Minimal surface disruption preserves structural integrity
Tissue Remodeling
Collagen & Elastin Synthesis
The wound-healing cascade progresses through three phases. Inflammation (days 1-5): growth factors and cytokines are released, recruiting fibroblasts to the area. Proliferation (days 5-21): fibroblasts produce type III collagen, angiogenesis improves blood supply. Remodeling (weeks 3-months): type III collagen converts to stronger type I collagen, and the new matrix matures and integrates with surrounding tissue.
  • Phase 1: Growth factor release and fibroblast recruitment
  • Phase 2: Type III collagen production and new blood vessel formation
  • Phase 3: Conversion to durable type I collagen over months
  • Progressive structural improvement with each treatment cycle
Why Microneedling

Treatment Advantages

🧬
Natural Collagen Induction
Microneedling triggers your body's own collagen production — not adding foreign material but stimulating your fibroblasts to rebuild skin structure naturally.
🎯
Precision Depth Control
Needle depth calibrated from 0.25mm to 2.5mm allows customized treatment intensity — gentler for sensitive areas, deeper for scarring and structural concerns.
🔬
Platform Versatility
Micro-channels serve as direct delivery pathways for exosomes, PDGF, growth factors, and serums — transforming microneedling into a delivery technology that amplifies every topical treatment.
🌍
All Skin Types
Unlike many laser treatments, microneedling is safe for all Fitzpatrick skin types (I-VI). The mechanical mechanism doesn't discriminate by skin color, making it universally applicable.
💰
Excellent Value
Microneedling delivers genuine collagen remodeling at an accessible price point — making professional-grade skin rejuvenation available for clients at every budget level.
📊
Cumulative Results
Each session builds on the previous one. Collagen production is progressive and cumulative — results continue improving for months after a treatment series.
Your Treatment

What to Expect

Before Your Session

Discontinue retinoids and exfoliating acids 5-7 days before treatment. Avoid blood-thinning medications and supplements (aspirin, fish oil, vitamin E) for 48 hours prior if medically appropriate. Avoid excessive sun exposure for 1-2 weeks before. Arrive with clean skin free of makeup.

During Treatment

A topical numbing cream is applied 20-30 minutes before treatment. Once the skin is prepared, your provider uses the Dr Pen Hydrapen across the treatment area with calibrated depth settings — shallower on the forehead and periorbital area, deeper on cheeks and jawline where thicker skin allows more aggressive treatment.

The device moves in overlapping passes for uniform micro-channel distribution. Treatment takes 20-30 minutes for the face. If pairing with serums, exosomes, or PDGF, these are applied during and immediately after needling to maximize delivery through open channels.

After Treatment & Recovery

Expect sunburn-like redness for 24-48 hours. Mild swelling may occur, particularly if deeper needle depths were used. Do not wash the face for 6-8 hours if topicals were infused during treatment. After this period, use gentle cleanser and moisturizer only. Avoid active skincare ingredients (retinol, vitamin C, AHAs/BHAs), direct sun, and strenuous exercise for 72 hours. Apply SPF 30+ daily.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How does microneedling stimulate collagen?+
Microneedling creates thousands of tiny, controlled punctures in the skin's surface. Your body interprets these as micro-injuries and activates the wound-healing cascade — an inflammatory response followed by proliferation of new cells and tissue remodeling. Fibroblasts are recruited to the area and stimulated to produce new collagen and elastin. The result is gradually firmer, smoother, more resilient skin.
Does microneedling hurt?+
A topical numbing cream is applied 20-30 minutes before treatment, making the procedure very comfortable. Most clients describe it as a vibrating sensation with mild pressure — like a gentle scratching. Areas with thinner skin (forehead, around eyes) may feel slightly more intense, but it's well-tolerated by the vast majority of clients.
How many microneedling sessions do I need?+
For general skin quality improvement, a series of 3 treatments spaced 4-6 weeks apart delivers excellent results. For acne scarring, 4-6 sessions may be needed depending on scar depth. Single sessions provide noticeable improvement, but collagen production is cumulative — each treatment builds on the previous one.
What is the difference between microneedling and the Exosome Facial?+
Standard microneedling relies on the body's own wound-healing response to produce collagen. The Exosome Facial uses the same microneedling process but adds exosome preparations — concentrated growth factors that amplify the collagen production and accelerate healing. Think of microneedling as the delivery system and exosomes as the amplification layer. Both are effective; the Exosome Facial delivers faster, more significant results.
How long until I see results from microneedling?+
Your skin will look brighter and feel smoother within a few days of treatment. However, true collagen remodeling takes time — initial structural improvements appear at 4-6 weeks, with continued improvement for up to 6 months as new collagen matures and integrates. This is why a series of treatments spaced 4-6 weeks apart delivers the most dramatic results.
