Active acne involves excess sebum production, clogged pores, bacterial colonization (Cutibacterium acnes), and inflammatory response. Effective treatment targets one or more of these four factors — reducing oil, clearing pores, killing bacteria, or calming inflammation. Acne scarring is a separate condition that develops when the dermis is damaged during the healing of inflamed breakouts.
